Title: Entertainment Apps (Music, Games, News)

Welcome back! So far in this module, youโ€™ve learned how to download apps, use everyday tools like Maps and Calendar, and even connect with family on Facebook or explore the world with YouTube.

Today, weโ€™re focusing on entertainment apps. These are apps designed to bring fun, joy, and relaxation into your life.

Weโ€™ll cover three of the most popular types for seniors:

  • Music apps: To listen to your favorite songs.
  • Game apps: To pass the time and keep your mind sharp.
  • News apps: To stay informed about whatโ€™s happening in the world.

By the end of this lesson, youโ€™ll feel confident using these apps for fun and enrichment.

Step 1: Music Apps

Music is one of the easiest ways to lift your mood, bring back memories, or simply relax.

Spotify

  • Look for the Spotify app (green circle with three black lines).
  • Open the app, and youโ€™ll see a search bar at the top.
  • Type in the name of your favorite artist, song, or album.
  • Tap play, and enjoy!

Spotify also creates playlists โ€” collections of songs โ€” for moods like โ€œRelaxing,โ€ โ€œOldies,โ€ or โ€œJazz.โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ Quick Tip: The free version works well, but youโ€™ll hear ads between songs.

YouTube Music

If you already enjoy YouTube, you might like YouTube Music.

  • The app looks like a red circle with a white play button.
  • It works similarly to Spotify โ€” type in what you want, and press play.

Step 2: Game Apps

Games arenโ€™t just for kids โ€” theyโ€™re a wonderful way to relax, keep your mind sharp, and even challenge yourself.

Popular Game Apps

  • Solitaire: A classic card game.
  • Sudoku: Great for logic and memory.
  • Words With Friends: Like Scrabble, but you play with family or friends online.
  • Candy Crush: A fun puzzle game with colorful candies.

How to Play

  1. Download a game from the Play Store.
  2. Tap the icon to open.
  3. Follow the instructions โ€” most games explain themselves as you play.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Quick Tip: Many games are free. Just be careful with โ€œin-app purchasesโ€ โ€” you donโ€™t need to spend money to enjoy them.

Step 3: News Apps

If you like keeping up with the world, news apps make it easy to get information in one place.

Google News

  • Look for the Google News app (blue, red, green, and yellow square with โ€œGโ€).
  • Open it to see headlines, stories, and categories like World, Health, Entertainment.

CNN, BBC, or Local News

  • You can also download apps from your favorite news sources.
  • Simply open the Play Store, type CNN or BBC, and install.
  • Open the app to browse stories or watch video clips.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Quick Tip: News apps often send notifications. If you find them distracting, you can turn them off in Settings.

Step 4: Practice Together

Hereโ€™s a fun practice routine:

  1. Open Spotify or YouTube Music and play one favorite song.
  2. Open a game app like Solitaire or Candy Crush and play for 5 minutes.
  3. Open Google News and read one headline.

Youโ€™ll see how quickly entertainment apps can brighten your day.

Real-Life Example

One of my students, Margaret, felt lonely in the evenings. When she discovered Spotify, she started listening to music from her teenage years. She told me, โ€œIt feels like Iโ€™m young again โ€” I can close my eyes and be back in the 1960s.โ€

Another student, Paul, played Sudoku daily. He said it kept his mind sharp and gave him something enjoyable to do while waiting for appointments.

And George, a retired teacher, loved using Google News to follow education stories and stay engaged with the world.

Entertainment apps can do more than pass time โ€” they bring joy, purpose, and stimulation.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Music stops playing when I close the app: Thatโ€™s normal with free versions. If you want continuous play, consider paid upgrades.
  • Game keeps asking me to pay money: Ignore the โ€œbuyโ€ buttons โ€” stick to the free levels.
  • News notifications are annoying: Open Settings > Notifications > choose the news app > turn off notifications.

Step 5: Staying Balanced

Itโ€™s easy to get carried away with entertainment apps. A good rule of thumb:

  • Use them for fun and relaxation.
  • Take breaks so you donโ€™t sit too long.
  • Balance them with real-life activities like walking, reading, or talking with family.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Quick Tip: Think of apps as spices โ€” a little adds flavor, but too much can be overwhelming.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Letโ€™s review what you learned today:

  • Music apps like Spotify and YouTube Music let you enjoy your favorite songs anytime.
  • Game apps like Solitaire, Sudoku, and Candy Crush keep you entertained and sharp.
  • News apps like Google News and CNN keep you informed.

Your take-action tool for today:

  • Play one favorite song using a music app.
