Since its inception in 2015, the Community Health Transportation program has become a vital service for residents along Ontario’s North Shore. Spearheaded by the Terrace Bay Superior Seniors Club in partnership with the Town of Terrace Bay and funded by the Province of Ontario, the program provides transportation to Thunder Bay and Marathon for anyone in need of access to out-of-town health care appointments.
What began as a local initiative has grown into a regional lifeline. Residents of Terrace Bay, Marathon, Schreiber, Rossport, Jackfish, and Pays Plat have all benefited from this compassionate and practical solution. For seniors who no longer drive, individuals with limited financial means, and those facing mobility challenges, the program has removed a major barrier to care—ensuring that geography and circumstance do not stand in the way of essential medical treatment.
The impact is deeply felt. People who once struggled to attend chemotherapy, specialist consultations, or surgical follow-ups now have a reliable, respectful way to get there. The service has improved health outcomes, reduced stress, and fostered a sense of dignity and inclusion for those who might otherwise be isolated.
Beyond individual benefits, the program has strengthened community bonds. It reflects a shared commitment to care, equity, and regional cooperation. By connecting people to the care they need, the Community Health Transportation program has become a model of what rural communities can achieve when they work together—with heart, vision, and support from all levels of government.
