Welcome back! In the last lesson, you learned how to set up Emergency SOS and your Medical ID, which gave you powerful tools for real emergencies. Now, letβs tackle a different kind of βemergencyβ β when your phone goes missing.
Weβve all experienced it: you set your phone down, get distracted, and suddenly canβt remember where it is. Was it in the kitchen? The car? Did you leave it at church or the grocery store? Losing your phone can feel stressful β but your iPhone has a built-in tool designed to help: Find My iPhone.
By the end of this lesson, youβll know how to:
- Make sure Find My iPhone is turned on.
- Use it to locate a missing phone.
- Keep your information safe, even if your phone is truly lost.
Letβs start with turning it on.
- Open your Settings app.
- Tap your name at the very top (where it shows your Apple ID).
- Tap Find My.
- Tap Find My iPhone.
- Make sure the switch is turned ON.
- Also turn on Send Last Location β this will automatically send Apple your phoneβs location when the battery is about to die.
Thatβs it! Your iPhone is now trackable if it ever goes missing.
Now, letβs say youβve misplaced your phone. How do you find it?
If you have another Apple device, like an iPad or Mac, you can open the Find My app on that device. It will show you a map with the location of your iPhone. You can even make it play a loud sound β helpful if itβs hiding under the couch cushions!
If you donβt have another Apple device, no problem. You can use any computer. Just go to iCloud.com, sign in with your Apple ID, and click βFind iPhone.β Youβll see a map with your phoneβs location.
Now, letβs cover safety features if your phone is lost outside your home.
- Play Sound: This makes your iPhone ring loudly, even if itβs on silent. Perfect if itβs nearby.
- Lost Mode: This locks your phone remotely and displays a custom message on the screen, like βThis phone is lost. Please call [your number].β That way, if someone finds it, theyβll know how to reach you.
- Erase iPhone: If you believe your iPhone is gone for good, you can erase all your personal information remotely. This keeps your data safe, even if you never get the phone back.
Letβs practice together:
- Open your Settings β Find My iPhone and make sure itβs turned on.
- If you have another Apple device, open the Find My app and see your phone on the map.
- Practice tapping βPlay Soundβ just to hear what it does.
Now, letβs answer some common questions:
- What if my phone is turned off? If the battery dies or the phone is off, Find My iPhone will show the last location it was before turning off. Thatβs why βSend Last Locationβ is important.
- Can other people track me with this? No. Only you, with your Apple ID and password, can see your phoneβs location. Apple designed this feature for privacy.
- What if I forget my Apple ID password? Without it, you wonβt be able to use Find My iPhone. Thatβs why itβs very important to write down your Apple ID and password somewhere safe.
Hereβs your quick win action step:
Today, turn on Find My iPhone if itβs not already on. Then, practice locating your phone using another Apple device or by signing in at iCloud.com. Finally, try playing the sound so youβll recognize it if you ever need it.
This small step can save you huge stress. With Find My iPhone, youβll never have to panic if your phone disappears. Instead, youβll know exactly how to track it, lock it, or protect your information.
Remember: your iPhone isnβt just a phone β itβs your lifeline, your calendar, your photos, your way to stay connected. Protecting it means protecting your independence.
In the next module, weβll finish your iPhone journey with some extra tips, tricks, and confidence boosters β the little shortcuts and hidden features that make using your iPhone even easier and more fun.
