Welcome to Module 6! Youβve come so far β from learning the basics of calls and texts, to safety features and apps that make life easier. Now, weβre going to add something that makes your iPhone feel almost like a personal assistant: Siri.
Siri is your iPhoneβs voice helper. Instead of tapping and typing, you can simply speak, and Siri will do things for you. This can save time, reduce frustration, and make using your iPhone feel effortless.
By the end of this lesson, youβll know how to:
- Activate Siri and ask questions.
- Use Siri for everyday tasks like making calls, sending texts, and setting reminders.
- Explore extra commands that make life easier.
Letβs start with the basics: activating Siri.
There are two main ways to use Siri:
- With your voice: Say βHey Siriβ (if itβs turned on). Your phone will beep, and Siri will be ready to listen.
- With a button: If you have an iPhone with Face ID (no home button), press and hold the side button. If you have an iPhone with a Home button, press and hold that.
Once Siri is listening, you just speak naturally, as if you were talking to a person.
Letβs try some everyday examples.
- Say: βHey Siri, call John.β β Siri will dial Johnβs number.
- Say: βHey Siri, send a text to Mary: Iβll be there in 10 minutes.β β Siri writes the message for you.
- Say: βHey Siri, whatβs the weather today?β β Siri reads out the forecast.
Notice that you donβt have to open apps or type anything β Siri does the work for you.
Now letβs explore some useful commands:
- Reminders: βHey Siri, remind me to take my medicine at 8 PM.β
- Alarms: βHey Siri, set an alarm for 7 AM.β
- Calendar events: βHey Siri, add a doctorβs appointment on Tuesday at 3 PM.β
- Directions: βHey Siri, give me directions to the nearest pharmacy.β
- Information: βHey Siri, how old is Tom Hanks?β or βWhatβs 45 divided by 3?β
Siri is especially helpful if typing feels tricky or slow. You just speak, and itβs done.
Hereβs a fun one: you can also say, βHey Siri, tell me a jokeβ β although Siriβs jokes may be a little silly!
Now, letβs pause and practice together:
- Hold down your button (or say βHey Siriβ) to activate Siri.
- Try saying: βWhat time is it?β
- Then try: βSend a message to myself.β
- Finally, try: βRemind me to drink water in 10 minutes.β
Youβll see how quickly Siri makes things happen.
Now letβs talk about tips for using Siri well:
- Speak clearly and at a normal pace. You donβt have to shout.
- If Siri doesnβt understand, you can correct it by saying, βNo, I saidβ¦β and try again.
- If you ever want to turn Siri off, you can do so in Settings β Siri & Search.
Here are a few common questions:
- Does Siri always listen to me? Siri only listens when you say βHey Siriβ or press the button. Otherwise, itβs not recording.
- What if I donβt want to use Siri? Thatβs okay! Siri is optional. But many people find it helpful, especially for hands-free use.
- Can Siri read my messages aloud? Yes β if you ask, βHey Siri, read my messages,β it will read them out.
Hereβs your quick win action step:
Right after this lesson, practice asking Siri to do three things: call someone, set a reminder, and check the weather. These are the most common, and once youβve tried them, youβll see how helpful Siri can be.
Think of Siri as your friendly assistant. The more you use it, the more natural it feels. Soon, you wonβt even think about typing for simple tasks β youβll just ask Siri.
In the next lesson, weβll explore Accessibility features β special settings that make the iPhone easier to see, hear, and use, especially for seniors. This is where your iPhone truly adapts to you.
Youβre doing wonderfully β keep going, and Iβll see you in the next lesson!
