Come  Play At The Seniors Games Room!

The Terrace Bay Superior Seniors 50 Plus club has a variety of fun activities that will stimulate your sense of fun, increase your fitness and keep you active through those darker and colder days ahead. This article focuses on the well-equipped games room. We have dart boards, pool and billiards tables set up for friendly, non-competitive fun. Sports are shown as being gruelling activities when, in fact, any activity that gets us moving at any age or fitness level has terrific benefits.

Playing pool, or darts, is a great way to have fun and enjoy many health and physical fitness benefits at the same time. We are often reminded that health is all about balancing wellness of mind body and spirit. The health benefits of playing games are incredible, so let’s examine them further.

Mind Games

It is a well-known fact that as we age, it’s important to find ways to continually learn new things. It’s definitely a case of use it (our cognition) or lose it. The games of pool and darts have many ways in which it contributes to a healthier mental state. Simply adding up dart scores is a great mental exercise (quick, what’s a triple 18 total?) Your creativity and focus will improve as you play these games. An improved imagination and creativity as you strategize, is just one of them. Visualization and problem-solving while friends are watching (and sometimes commenting) only makes the games more challenging and stimulating. Playing pool and darts requires mental strategy, memory, focus, and patience. These are all great things to help keep your mind healthy, strong and sharp!

Body Moves

Personally, I’ve never been naturally coordinated. However, I’ve found that both darts and pool are forging new confidence in my hand-eye coordination. Like any activity, practice is helping me to slowly improve. Every once in a while, I’m actually pleasantly surprised by a good shot! But, the most fun I have is laughing at my flubs. Playing these games has improved my balance and stretching. As you position your body to take aim at the ball or the dart board, it is necessary to get into positions that challenge your ordinary range of movement. Even focusing on balance before letting the dart fly has helped maintain a sense of good balance. Lunging, squatting and bending while stretching your arms out and reaching across the pool cue are all forms of low impact movement. When you keep the body moving around the table you are getting beneficial low impact activity and lowers your risk of falling when doing other activities.

The Top Emotional Health Benefits of the Game

Spirit

It’s easy to fall into the habit of relying on television (or scrolling) to while away the hours. Getting into the games room can quickly replace these sitting hours with fun, social activity. There are clear emotional benefits to playing darts and pool in a fun social setting. Playing games can provide a social circle that keeps enthusiasm, connectivity alive and well. The self confidence of improved health and stronger friendships can help us through the inevitable difficult areas of life. Feeling good about yourself (and a great shot you made) is gold!

Everyone can play pool and darts. Socializing and having fun with friends and acquaintances helps you to develop relationships. The more competitive-minded can play in tournaments to enhance their fun. We have all the equipment to play and no experience is needed.

Contact the Seniors club or check out our weekly schedule for games room times.
