Welcome back! In the last lesson, we talked about avoiding scams and keeping your iPhone secure. That was all about prevention. Now weβre going to focus on something that could one day be life-saving: Emergency SOS and Medical ID.
Your iPhone isnβt just a communication tool β it can actually help you in an emergency. With just a few steps, you can call for help instantly and share critical health information with first responders.
By the end of this lesson, youβll know how to:
- Use Emergency SOS to call for help quickly.
- Set up your Medical ID so important information is available on your phone.
- Give your family and caregivers peace of mind.
Letβs begin with Emergency SOS.
Emergency SOS is a feature that allows you to call emergency services (like 911 in the U.S.) with just a few presses of your iPhoneβs buttons. This is incredibly useful if you canβt unlock your phone or donβt have time to dial.
Hereβs how it works:
- On an iPhone with Face ID (no home button): press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons at the same time. Keep holding until you see the SOS slider. You can either slide it, or if you keep holding, your iPhone will automatically call emergency services.
- On an iPhone with a Home button: quickly press the side (or top) button five times. The SOS slider will appear, and you can slide to call.
Once activated, your iPhone will also send your location to your emergency contacts if you have them set up. This means your loved ones will know where you are, even if you canβt talk.
Now, letβs set up your Medical ID.
Medical ID is like a digital emergency card that lives on your iPhone. It stores important information such as your name, date of birth, medical conditions, allergies, medications, and emergency contacts. The best part? Paramedics and doctors can see this information from your lock screen, even if your phone is locked.
Hereβs how to set it up:
- Open the Health app (it looks like a white square with a red heart).
- Tap your profile picture in the top right.
- Tap Medical ID.
- Tap Edit in the top-right corner.
- Enter your important health information β things like conditions (for example, diabetes), allergies (like penicillin), medications, and blood type if you know it.
- Scroll down and add Emergency Contacts. These are the people you want notified if something happens. You can choose anyone from your Contacts list.
- Make sure βShow When Lockedβ is turned on. This ensures that emergency workers can see your Medical ID without needing your passcode.
- Tap Done to save.
Congratulations β youβve just given first responders vital information that could help save your life.
Letβs pause and practice together:
- Try activating Emergency SOS (but stop before it actually calls). Just practice holding the buttons until the SOS slider appears, then cancel.
- Open your Health app and add at least one piece of medical information and one emergency contact.
Now, letβs cover a few common questions:
- Will Emergency SOS call by accident? Donβt worry β youβll see the SOS slider first, and you can cancel before it calls. If it does call by accident, just stay on the line and tell them it was a mistake.
- Who can see my Medical ID? Only someone holding your phone in an emergency, from the lock screen. Itβs designed to help first responders, not strangers browsing your phone.
- Do I really need this if Iβm healthy? Yes. Even if youβre healthy, accidents happen. Having your emergency contact listed and basic information like blood type is always helpful.
Hereβs your quick win action step:
Today, set up your Medical ID with at least your name, birthdate, one medical condition or allergy (if any), and one emergency contact. Then, practice triggering Emergency SOS so you know how it feels. These two steps alone could make a world of difference in an emergency.
Remember, your iPhone isnβt just about staying connected. Itβs about staying protected. With Emergency SOS and Medical ID, youβre giving yourself and your loved ones extra peace of mind β and thatβs priceless.
In our next lesson, weβll finish this module by learning how to find a lost iPhone with βFind My iPhone.β This feature ensures that even if your phone goes missing, you can track it and keep your information safe.
Youβre doing fantastic β keep going, and Iβll see you in the next lesson!
