Title: Using the Play Store Safely

Welcome back! In the last lesson, you learned how to update your phone and apps safely. That was a big step in keeping your phone secure and running smoothly.

Today, we’re going to talk about the Google Play Store — the official store where you can download apps, games, books, and even movies.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to:

  • Search for and install apps from the Play Store
  • Recognize safe vs. unsafe apps
  • Read app reviews and permissions before downloading
  • Avoid scams and fake apps

Step 1: What Is the Play Store?

The Google Play Store is like a giant library for apps. Every app you use — from WhatsApp to YouTube to your favorite game — comes from the Play Store.

👉 Important: Always download apps from the Play Store, not from links in texts, emails, or random websites.

Step 2: Searching for Apps

  1. Open the Google Play Store (look for a multicolored triangle icon).
  2. Tap the search bar at the top.
  3. Type the name of the app you want — for example, Zoom or Spotify.
  4. Tap the app in the results, then tap Install.

The app will download and appear on your home screen.

Step 3: Recognizing Safe Apps

Not all apps are safe. Some try to trick you into giving personal information. Here’s how to spot the safe ones:

  • Developer name: Look for familiar or official developers (e.g., Google LLC for Gmail).
  • Downloads: Popular apps usually have millions of downloads.
  • Reviews: Check star ratings and read a few comments.
  • Permissions: Apps should only ask for what they need (e.g., a flashlight app should not need access to your contacts).

👉 Quick Rule: If an app looks suspicious or has very few downloads/reviews, avoid it.

Step 4: Reading Permissions

Before installing, scroll down to see what permissions the app requests.

Examples:

  • A maps app might ask for location access — that makes sense.
  • A calculator app asking for microphone access — that doesn’t make sense and could be a red flag.

👉 Always ask: “Does this app really need this permission?”

Step 5: Avoiding Scams and Fake Apps

Scammers sometimes create fake apps that look like real ones. Protect yourself by:

  • Always checking the developer’s name.
  • Avoiding apps with strange spelling (e.g., “WhatzApp” instead of “WhatsApp”).
  • Reading recent reviews — if many people complain it’s fake, stay away.

👉 Quick Tip: If you’re unsure, ask a family member or search online for the app’s official name.

Step 6: Uninstalling Apps

If you download an app and don’t like it, you can easily remove it.

  1. Open the Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile picture > Manage apps & device.
  3. Select the app and tap Uninstall.

This clears space and removes apps you don’t use.

Step 7: Practice Together

Let’s practice step by step:

  1. Open the Play Store and search for a simple app, like Weather.
  2. Check the star rating, developer, and number of downloads.
  3. Install it, then open it from your home screen.
  4. Now, uninstall it to see how that works too.

Congratulations — you now know how to safely add and remove apps!

Real-Life Example

One of my students, Nancy, once downloaded a fake “banking app” from outside the Play Store after getting a text message. It asked her for personal details — luckily, she stopped before entering them. Now she only downloads from the Play Store and always checks developer names.

Another student, George, loved trying new games but filled his phone with dozens he never played. After learning how to uninstall apps, he said, “My phone feels lighter and faster now — no more clutter.”

Troubleshooting Tips

  • I can’t find the Play Store: Swipe up on your home screen and search for it. If it’s missing, ask a family member — it’s always pre-installed on Android phones.
  • App won’t install: Check your Wi-Fi connection and storage space.
  • App asks for payment: Many apps are free, but some require purchase. If you don’t want to pay, stick with free options.
  • App keeps crashing: Try updating it in the Play Store or uninstalling and reinstalling.

Step 8: Extra Safety Tips

Once you’re comfortable, here are more ways to stay safe:

  • Turn on Play Protect: In the Play Store > Menu > Play Protect, turn on scan. This checks apps for safety.
  • Set parental controls (optional): Prevents accidental purchases or unsafe downloads.
  • Update apps regularly: As you learned, updates improve security.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Let’s review today’s lesson:

  • The Play Store is the safe place to get apps.
  • Always check ratings, reviews, and permissions.
  • Be cautious of fake apps with odd names or few downloads.
  • You can easily uninstall apps you don’t want.

Your take-action tool for today:

  • Search for one new app in the Play Store.
  • Check its reviews, developer, and permissions.
  • Install it, then uninstall it just to practice.

In the next module, we’ll explore staying connected — learning how to use apps like WhatsApp, Zoom, and social media to connect with loved ones.

You’ve built a strong foundation for safety — I’ll see you in Module 7, Lesson 1: Using WhatsApp for Messaging and Calls.
