Title: Editing Photos (Brightness, Cropping, Filters)

Welcome back! You’ve already learned how to take photos, organize them, and even share them with family and friends. That’s a huge step toward making your phone a tool for connection and joy.

Today, we’ll learn how to make your photos look even better by editing them.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to:

  • Adjust brightness and color
  • Crop photos to remove unwanted parts
  • Use filters to change the style of your pictures

Step 1: Why Edit Photos?

Editing helps improve your photos, especially if:

  • A picture came out too dark or too bright.
  • You want to focus on one part of the photo.
  • You’d like to add some artistic flair with filters.

Think of editing as “polishing” your photos — like framing a painting to make it shine.

Step 2: Opening the Edit Tools

  1. Open your Photos app.
  2. Select the picture you want to edit.
  3. Tap the Edit icon — usually looks like three sliders or a pencil.

Now you’re in editing mode.

Step 3: Adjusting Brightness and Color

When a photo looks too dark or washed out, brightness and color adjustments can fix it.

  • Brightness/Light: Slide the bar left to make the picture darker, right to make it brighter.
  • Contrast: Adjusts the difference between light and dark areas.
  • Color/Saturation: Makes colors more vivid or more muted.

👉 Quick Tip: Small changes make a big difference. Don’t overdo it — natural looks best.

Step 4: Cropping a Photo

Cropping lets you cut out the parts you don’t want.

  1. In editing mode, tap Crop (a square icon with overlapping corners).
  2. Drag the edges to keep only the part of the photo you like.
  3. Tap Save or Done.

Example: If you took a picture of your grandchild but also captured the messy kitchen in the background, cropping lets you keep just your grandchild in the photo.

Step 5: Using Filters

Filters are pre-made styles you can apply to a photo. They can make it black and white, warmer, cooler, or more dramatic.

  1. In editing mode, tap Filters.
  2. Swipe through the options.
  3. Tap one to preview it on your photo.
  4. Tap Save if you like it.

👉 Quick Tip: Filters are fun, but use them sparingly if you want your photos to look natural.

Step 6: Practice Together

Let’s practice editing one photo:

  1. Open your Photos app and select a picture.
  2. Tap Edit.
  3. Adjust the brightness slightly to make it clearer.
  4. Crop the photo to remove something distracting.
  5. Try one filter, then save your changes.

Congratulations — you’ve just improved your photo!

Real-Life Example

One of my students, June, took a picture of her new puppy indoors, but it came out very dark. She thought it was ruined. After adjusting the brightness, the photo looked perfect — she was so proud she sent it to all her friends.

Another student, Frank, used cropping to remove the background clutter from his family photos. He said, “Now my pictures look like they were taken by a professional!”

Editing makes a big difference, even with just a few simple adjustments.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • I can’t find the Edit button: Look for a pencil or three-slider icon. It’s usually at the bottom of the screen.
  • I don’t like the changes I made: Tap Undo or Revert to Original to go back.
  • I saved over my photo by mistake: Most phones automatically keep both the original and edited version. Check your gallery.
  • My edits look strange: Less is more. Keep changes simple and natural.

Step 7: Extra Fun Options

When you’re ready to explore more, try:

  • Rotate: Straighten a tilted photo.
  • Auto-Enhance: One tap to improve the photo automatically.
  • Collages: Combine several photos into one.

These are optional, so don’t feel pressured — the basics of brightness, cropping, and filters are more than enough.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Let’s review:

  • Editing helps improve photos by adjusting brightness, cropping, or adding filters.
  • The Edit button opens tools like brightness, color, and cropping.
  • Filters can add fun styles, but small changes often work best.

Your take-action tool for today:

  • Open one photo and adjust the brightness.
  • Crop one photo to focus on the subject.
  • Try one filter and save it.

In the next module, we’ll move into settings and personalization — where you’ll learn how to make your phone truly feel like yours by changing the wallpaper, ringtone, and text size.

Great job today — I’ll see you in Module 5, Lesson 1: Adjusting Wallpaper, Ringtones, and Display Settings.
