Title: Using Zoom for Video Calls

Welcome back! In the last lesson, you learned how to use WhatsApp to stay in touch with loved ones. That’s a fantastic tool for one-on-one and small group connections.

Today, we’re going to explore Zoom, an app that’s great for larger gatherings, online classes, or virtual events. Many people use it for family reunions, church meetings, or even exercise classes.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to:

  • Download and set up Zoom
  • Join a Zoom meeting
  • Use video and audio controls during a meeting
  • Host your own Zoom call

Step 1: What Is Zoom?

Zoom is a free app that lets you:

  • Join video calls with many people at once
  • See everyone on your screen
  • Share your own video, audio, and even your screen (optional)

👉 Quick Tip: Zoom is especially helpful for family gatherings or community groups because it can include dozens of people at the same time.

Step 2: Downloading and Setting Up Zoom

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for Zoom Cloud Meetings.
  3. Tap Install.
  4. Open the app.
  5. You can either sign up for a free account or simply join meetings as a guest.

👉 Quick Tip: If you only want to join meetings, you don’t need to sign up. Just have the meeting link or ID ready.

Step 3: Joining a Zoom Meeting

There are two common ways to join:

Option 1: Using a Link

  • Someone will send you a link (usually by email or text).
  • Tap the link.
  • Zoom will open automatically, and you’ll enter the meeting.

Option 2: Using a Meeting ID

  1. Open Zoom.
  2. Tap Join a Meeting.
  3. Enter the Meeting ID (a series of numbers).
  4. Enter your name (so people know who you are).
  5. Tap Join.

👉 Quick Tip: If asked for a password, the host will provide it.

Step 4: Using Video and Audio Controls

Once you’re in a Zoom meeting, you’ll see several buttons:

  • Mute/Unmute (microphone icon): Tap to turn your microphone on or off.
  • Start/Stop Video (camera icon): Tap to show or hide your face.
  • Participants: See who else is in the meeting.
  • Leave: Exit the meeting when you’re done.

👉 Quick Tip: Keep your microphone on mute when you’re not speaking — this helps reduce background noise.

Step 5: Hosting Your Own Zoom Call

If you want to start a call yourself:

  1. Open Zoom and sign in.
  2. Tap New Meeting.
  3. Tap Start a Meeting.
  4. Invite others by tapping Participants > Invite.
  5. Share the link or Meeting ID with family or friends.

👉 Quick Tip: Hosting is simple — you’re just the one who starts the meeting.

Step 6: Practice Together

Let’s practice:

  1. Open Zoom and tap Join a Meeting.
  2. Enter a sample Meeting ID (your instructor can provide one during class).
  3. Try turning your video on and off.
  4. Try muting and unmuting yourself.

Now you’re ready for real calls with family and friends!

Real-Life Example

One of my students, Claire, missed her weekly Bible study when it moved online. After learning Zoom, she rejoined and said, “I never thought I’d be part of a video meeting, but now I see my friends’ faces every week.”

Another student, Sam, used Zoom to host a surprise virtual birthday party for his grandson. Family from three different states joined in. He said, “It was just like being together — we even sang Happy Birthday!”

Troubleshooting Tips

  • I can’t hear others: Make sure your phone volume is turned up. Also check that you didn’t accidentally mute them.
  • They can’t hear me: Tap the microphone icon to unmute.
  • My video looks dark: Sit facing a window or lamp for better lighting.
  • The meeting keeps freezing: Move closer to your Wi-Fi router for stronger internet.

Step 7: Extra Features

Once you’re comfortable, you can try:

  • Gallery View: See everyone at once in a grid.
  • Chat: Type messages during the meeting.
  • Screen Share: Show a document or photo to others (optional).

These features are fun, but not necessary for basic use.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Let’s review:

  • Zoom allows you to connect with many people at once.
  • You can join using a link or Meeting ID.
  • You control your microphone and camera with simple buttons.
  • Hosting a call is as easy as tapping “New Meeting.”

Your take-action tool for today:

  • Download Zoom from the Play Store.
  • Practice joining a meeting using a link or ID.
  • Try muting, unmuting, and turning your video on and off.

In the next lesson, we’ll explore Facebook basics — another powerful way to stay connected with friends, family, and communities online.

You’re doing amazing — I’ll see you in Module 7, Lesson 3: Introduction to Facebook Basics.
