Title: Using WhatsApp for Messaging and Calls

Welcome to Module 7! In the last module, you learned how to stay safe by using the Play Store wisely. Now, we’ll shift to something more fun and heartwarming: staying connected with family and friends.

In this lesson, we’ll explore WhatsApp, one of the most popular messaging apps in the world. Millions of people use it every day because it’s free, simple, and works almost anywhere.

By the end of this lesson, you’ll know how to:

  • Download and set up WhatsApp
  • Send and receive text messages
  • Share photos and voice notes
  • Make voice and video calls

Step 1: What Is WhatsApp?

WhatsApp is a free app that lets you:

  • Send text messages to individuals or groups
  • Share pictures, videos, and voice messages
  • Make free voice and video calls (using Wi-Fi or mobile data)

👉 Quick Tip: Unlike normal text messages, WhatsApp uses the internet. That means you can send unlimited messages and calls without worrying about your phone bill.

Step 2: Downloading and Setting Up WhatsApp

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for WhatsApp Messenger (by WhatsApp LLC).
  3. Tap Install.
  4. Open the app when it finishes.
  5. Enter your phone number. WhatsApp will send you a text to confirm it’s really your number.
  6. Add your name and optional profile photo.

Now you’re ready to connect!

Step 3: Sending Text Messages

  1. Open WhatsApp.
  2. Tap the green chat button at the bottom right.
  3. Select a contact (anyone in your phone’s contacts who has WhatsApp will appear).
  4. Type your message in the box at the bottom.
  5. Tap the send button (a little paper airplane icon).

👉 Quick Tip: If you don’t see someone, it means they don’t have WhatsApp yet. You can invite them to join.

Step 4: Sending Photos, Videos, and Voice Notes

Sending Photos or Videos

  1. Open a chat.
  2. Tap the paperclip icon (attachment).
  3. Select Gallery to choose an existing photo/video, or Camera to take a new one.
  4. Tap Send.

Sending Voice Notes

  1. Open a chat.
  2. Press and hold the microphone icon at the bottom right.
  3. Speak into your phone.
  4. Release the button to send.

👉 Quick Tip: Voice notes are great if typing is difficult.

Step 5: Making Voice and Video Calls

WhatsApp makes calls over the internet, so they’re free.

Voice Call

  1. Open a chat with someone.
  2. Tap the phone icon at the top.

Video Call

  1. Open a chat.
  2. Tap the video camera icon at the top.

👉 Quick Tip: For best quality, use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data.

Step 6: Group Chats

WhatsApp also lets you chat with multiple people at once — perfect for family groups.

  1. From the main screen, tap the green chat button.
  2. Tap New Group.
  3. Select the people you want to add.
  4. Give the group a name (e.g., “Family” or “Book Club”).
  5. Tap Create.

Now everyone in the group can see and reply to messages, photos, and videos.

Step 7: Practice Together

Let’s practice WhatsApp together:

  1. Send a simple “Hello” to a friend or family member.
  2. Share one photo from your gallery.
  3. Record a short voice note.
  4. Try making one voice call.

Congratulations — you’ve just connected with someone on WhatsApp!

Real-Life Example

One of my students, Betty, hadn’t seen her granddaughter in over a year because she lived overseas. After learning WhatsApp video calling, she said, “It felt like she was right in my living room. I cried tears of joy.”

Another student, Mark, created a family WhatsApp group. Now he and his siblings share photos, jokes, and updates every day. He said, “It feels like we’re all together again, even though we live in different states.”

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Messages aren’t sending: Check if you’re connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data.
  • Call quality is poor: Switch to Wi-Fi or move to an area with better signal.
  • I can’t find someone on WhatsApp: Make sure they have installed the app too.
  • Too many notifications from groups: You can mute groups by tapping the group name > Mute notifications.

Step 8: Extra Features

Once you’re comfortable, explore these extras:

  • Status Updates: Post photos or messages that disappear in 24 hours.
  • Starred Messages: Save important texts for easy access.
  • Document Sharing: Send PDFs or files.

These are optional — the basics of messaging and calling are all you really need.

Wrap-Up & Next Steps

Let’s review:

  • WhatsApp is a free app for texts, photos, voice notes, and calls.
  • You can send messages, share photos, and make voice or video calls easily.
  • Groups allow families and friends to stay connected in one place.

Your take-action tool for today:

  • Send one message, one photo, and one voice note to a loved one.
  • Try making one voice or video call.

In the next lesson, we’ll explore another powerful way to stay connected: Zoom — perfect for larger gatherings, classes, or meetings.

You’re doing amazing — I’ll see you in Module 7, Lesson 2: Using Zoom for Video Calls.
